Male Infertility Evaluations Q&A

When should someone consider a male infertility evaluation?

Consider scheduling a male infertility evaluation at Adonis Men’s Sexual Health Center if you and your partner regularly have sex and you’ve been unable to conceive a child after trying for at least 12 months. Either partner can be infertile, but male infertility accounts for about half of all cases.

What do male infertility evaluations involve?

A male infertility evaluation takes about an hour and involves the following:

Review of your health history

Your Adonis Men’s Sexual Health Center provider reviews your medical records and asks about your lifestyle, including how often you exercise, if you have any underlying medical conditions, and whether you smoke or drink alcohol. Make sure to answer these inquiries honestly, as they provide key insights into your reproductive health.

Physical exam

Your provider examines your penis and testicles, checking for problems that might prevent semen from effectively leaving your body during ejaculation. More specifically, they look for excessive scar tissue, swelling, and/or skin discoloration that might indicate an underlying sexual health problem.

Laboratory testing

Your provider orders several tests, including blood work and urinalysis, to assess your hormone levels. They also collect a semen sample and look at it under a microscope to determine your sperm count and sperm motility.

Diagnostic imaging

Sometimes, a blockage or scar tissue prevents semen from traveling from the testicles to the penis. Doppler ultrasound imaging helps determine if these issues are present and assists your provider in developing a personalized fertility treatment plan.

What if an evaluation confirms male fertility problems?

At Adonis Men’s Sexual Health Center, your provider develops a custom treatment plan if your male fertility evaluation confirms a fertility problem. For example, various medications and surgeries can improve sperm production and transport. Alternatively, there are lifestyle changes you can make to increase sperm production and enhance sperm health.

Your Adonis Men’s Sexual Health Center provider works with you and your partner each step of the way to ensure optimal results. Many patients can conceive a child within six months to a year of starting fertility treatment.
